Venice: The City Built in a Lagoon

Today we took a high speed train from Florence to Venice and explored this unique city. Venice was built in a lagoon because it’s original inhabitants were searching for safety and security. They built a city with no roads, only boat canals.  Venice is home to many Catholic Churches including St Mark’s Basilica which took over 100 years to build and was completed in 1092. Today Venice is know for its Murano glass, leather goods, and many universities that specialize in the arts. Oh, and don’t forget the gondola rides!

A Visit to St. Benedict’s Cave

When St. Benedict was a young man, he grew increasingly disenchanted with the Roman lifestyle of the time and wanted to go somewhere where he would not be thrown off course from growing closer to God. So he moved into this cave near what is now Subiaco up in the mountains. Benedict lived there as a hermit for three years. People who lived in the area would bring food in a basket and send it up to him. Eventually he was asked to be the abbot of the monastery, building 12 of them, one which we visited today. This one was the cave which he retreated to. Father Steve also said Mass today, the Feast Day of St. Joseph, which is a national holiday in Italy, the students helped with the other roles at Mass.  After Mass, Don Sergio one of the Monks, led us on a tour. This entire monastery at Subiaco is built around St. Benedict’s cave, in the side of the mountain. It is painted with frescoes of Christian teachings throughout.
